Formed in 1967, their original line-up consisted of Burke Shelley on bass and vocals, Tony Bourge, guitar, and Ray Phillips, drums. Some might say that Budgie was one of the first Heavy Metal bands, with fast, heavy music (the likes of which wasn't really made popular until iron Maiden and other NWOBHM acts) being played as early as 1973, even before bands like Judas Priest. Notable Heavy Metal style songs include Napolean Bona-Parts 1 & 2 and Breadfan, later covered by Metallica. (Metallica also covered another Budgie song, Crash Course In Brain Surgery. Their debut album in strong blues oriented hard rock lines was recorded at Rockfield Studios with Black Sabbath producer Rodger Bain and released in 1971, followed by Squawk in 1972. The 3rd album, Never Turn Your Back on a Friend, ensured their place in rock and roll history. In for the Kill, Bandolier and Impeckable only furthered their musical reputation and left many wondering why they were never as famous as they should have been. Newer lineups have carried on, albeit more heavy metal, less melodic heavy rock, but still plugging away.

Tredegar

Ian Hornsby (vocals), Andy Wood (guitar), Tony Bourge (guitar), Alan Fish (bass), Ray Phillips (drums)

Based in Wales, TREDEGAR was initiated in 1982 by the ex-BUDGIE duo of drummer Ray Phillips and guitarist Tony Bourge in collaboration with erstwhile ZORRO, DUMPYS RUSTY NUTS and GROUNDHOGS bass player Alan Fish. TREDEGAR made a name for themselves by self financing their album and single release. The band found themselves minus a vocalist prior to recording the first 1986 album so PERSIAN RISK and TOKYO BLADE frontman Carl Sentence performed vocal duties on the record. The first 500 copies of the album were coated in genuine gold leaf, making them much sought after collectors items.
